Young people say school is not preparing them for work!

So I was reading some research this week from the Edge Foundation that suggests that young people across England are fed up with a dull and irrelevant education and are demanding a radical overhaul of the current system.

According to this new research, 74 per cent feel that the system needs to be changed to better meet the needs of young people – with 43 per cent finding school either boring or irrelevant.
The current education system is leaving young people so unexcited (83 per cent) and uninterested (45 per cent) that eight in ten believe that young people are fed up with school before they’ve even reached 16 – with 40 per cent believing that there are not enough paths to success available.

Over half (56 per cent) of Year 11 students are worried that school doesn’t do enough to prepare young people for the world of work. And the reality is that 70 per cent of young people working full time believe this to be true with 57 per cent of students wanting schools to give them more experience of the skills needed by employers.

The Edge Foundation believes that the current school system, “with its corrosive divide between academic and vocational learning, reflects a social attitude which views ‘know how’ as inferior to ‘know what’. “The Edge argues that this attitude is failing children and the UK economy.

Do you think this research hits the nail on the head and what can you do to help?  Do you believe that the new Diploma will go someway to improving the education system?  Or perhaps you think that young people should stop moaning and get learning?  Perhaps they’ve never had it so good?  What do you think?

I think that young people these days have a whole lot more choice than I had when I was at school. However, I think I’d agree with the findings because even with more work-based qualifications on offer, many young people are still not ready for the reality of work. This is obviously an argument for getting employers more involed in education and I think we probably should do more to offer placements to young people at school but quite often the red tape involved wastes vaulable time!
