A report recently submitted to the government by the LPC calls for the introduction of a minimum wage for apprentices. The Commission will announce its recommendations in 2010.
Currently, apprentices are exempt from national minimum wage regulations for the first year of their apprenticeship – in England the minimum “weekly allowance” employers have to pay an apprentice is £95 pw although in practice many employers pay over this amount.
Do apprentices deserve to be paid a national minimum wage? Can employers afford it? Would this put you off recruiting an apprentice? How much do you pay apprentices you currently employ?
It’s not too late to submit views to the Low Pay Commission on their proposals – and Connexions would like to let the Commission know what local employers are saying. So tell us what you think!
I agree with the above. I think that the Government should concentrate funds on this rather than bailing out the banks. I think an Apprenticeship is a fantastic way to start a career and learn on the job and Apprentices deserve to be valued and earn the minimum wage. However, it’s sometimes not possible for us, as employers, to afford this without Goverment support.

The point isn’t about apprentices deserving a minimum wage it’s more about whether employers can AFFORD to pay someone young and with little experience/skills a minimum wage. I’ve thought about getting involved but wage costs are a significant factor for me. The government would be better encouraging small firms like mine to take on apprentices by offering help with wages so that I could take someone on and expand my business.Loads of businesses could be helped this way and at the same time helpd schools and college leavers who are trying to get started in a job.
