Helping you make the connection.

So Alan Milburn’s ‘Access to Professions report’ revealed that people from working class backgrounds are under represented in some professions, like law and medicine.

This revelation will hardly be a surprise to many but what’s going wrong? Why does the class system in Britain still pervade educational chances and opportunities? And what are the solutions?

For our part, in Nottinghamshire, Connexions works hard to encourage young people to aspire and provide them with quality, impartial careers guidance, so why are there not more working class young people becoming judges, barristers and going into other decision making positions. Why are the gifted and talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds not progressing into the top jobs and what can we do about it?

Well, the Government has a response and recently announced a scheme to pay schools £250 per pupil per year to coach identified pupils who show potential but come from a poorer background.

What do you think? Will this work? What do you think Connexions can do to help more young people to aspire and perhaps what can you do as business owners in Nottinghamshire?

Personally, I think it needs to start earlier than 13. Not at age 7 as recent reports suggest, but when children start secondary school they need to have work tasters, meet role models, perhaps young people from their area who have gone on to University, have a career in medicine or law or are succesful in their chosen career to show them that anything is possible.

I don’t think this can change overnight, it’s part of the the deep rooted class structure in the UK. Add to this that a university education is expensive, particularly law and medicine!
